Description:
164 full-page plates (85 % entirely new, never
before reproduced!), have been brought together in this remarkably inexpensive,
authoritative and comprehensive collection. ladislas Segy, world famous
expert on modern and African art, has produced a magnificent group of
photographs which capture all the plastic quality of the original sculptures.
A wealth of material is illustrated, in wood and metal, showing typical
productions of 50 art-producing tribes of West and Central Africa. Works
of the Ashanti (Gold Coast), Bakongo and Bateke (Belgium Congo), Yoruba
(Nigeria), Sherbro (Sierra leone) and dozens of other tribes are strikingly
represented. Each piece of sculpture has been selected for its importance
in the life of the tribe, and for its intrinsic plastic quality.
In a 34-page introduction Dr. Segy presents a straight-forward, simple
analysis of African sculpture,
with frequent reference to material from anthropology, history of religion,
and psychology. He shows the role of content and the expression of that
content in African sculpture, and also examines similar forces at work
in modern western man, enabling him to orient himself to the experience
of appreciating African sculpture.
